FIDEM Charity Foundation has received a “most generous” donation from i-gaming giant Betsson Group which will allow it to further its work with vulnerable women and adolescent girls.

Established in 2018, FIDEM Charity Foundation works with a network of care specialists, private companies and organisations to help mainly women and adolescent girls overcome adversities in their life and unlock their true potential through education. FIDEM’s “Educate to Empower” programme has so far helped over 50 women train in a variety of fields such as accountancy, computer literacy, management, beauty therapy, bus driving licence and sixth form by giving them free access to courses and material such as laptops or text books.

FIDEM Charity Foundation founder Dr Sabine Agius Cabourdin says: “It gives us tremendous satisfaction to see these women thrive and succeed with Fidem’s assistance. We believe that education is the key to changing a person’s life around. We have helped numerous women rebuild their life after leaving a situation of domestic abuse or extreme poverty simply by giving them access to training courses that eventually led them to achieve financial independence.”

“Our small team of volunteers gives all their time from the heart but material assistance costs. We are truly grateful to Betsson Group for their most generous donation of €10,000 which will contribute towards our mission.”

Over the past two years FIDEM has been inundated with requests for material assistance with more and more families not being able to afford basic necessities such as school uniforms or stationery equipment. FIDEM has also supported over 100 people with their mental wellbeing through its “Hear to Help” helpline. During the pandemic FIDEM built an online community of over 6,000 people through its “We Connect” project assisting them with their emotional, mental and physical wellbeing to overcome feelings of isolation and loneliness through articles and videos created specifically for them by a number of local psychologists, therapists, nutritionists, personal trainers and other wellbeing experts.

FIDEM is supported by a number of patrons who donate from €1,000 (“Emerald” patron) to €10,000 and over (“Diamond” patron). Donations of any amount can also be made via the charity’s website www.fidem.org.mt.

“A gift of €200 can fund an educational proficiency course in Maths, English or Maltese which would serve as a vital stepping stone for a participant to then enrol in a further education course that would eventually lead to employment,” says Dr Agius Cabourdin. “A donation of €400 would cover the expenses for one semester of a part-time degree course at the University of Malta which would give a working woman the opportunity to further her studies while still providing for her family. Every cent donated is accounted for and leads directly to practical help that makes a real difference in a person’s life.”
